The village is surrounded by the impressive rock formations of the Mandlwand, part of the Hochkönig massive. It is a very idyllic village, that finds its roots 4,000 years ago, when the Illyrians were mining for copper. Modern copper mining was the foundation of the village till 1977. Today it is a paradise for skiers, hikers, (mountain)bikers and families.
Luchs Lodge is situated 100 m above the centre of the village. You can walk down in 10 minutes or only 2 minutes by car. Mühlbach is a small mountain village, but it features the basic needs. There is a supermarket (07:30-12:30 and 2:30 till 18:00, Sat till 12:00, Sun closed), a bakery (opens 07:00) and a couple of local restaurants. The local bank has an ATM that be accessed 24/7. In winter, Apres-ski is done mostly in the very cosy Alm huts on the slopes.
In neighboring Bisschofshofen there is a wider variety of both shops and restaurants.
For all activities, please see the Summer and Winter sections.
The Hochkönig ski area covers the villages of Mühlbach, Dienten and Maria Alm, perfectly linked with 32 lifts and 120 kilometers of slopes of different difficulties. And that’s just the Hochkönig area; your skipass is valid for the entire Ski Amadé area, the largest ski area of Austria with 760 km of slopes.
The skilift in Mühlbach is at the edge of the village, where you will find the base station of the Karbachbahn. This lift will take you directly into the larger Hochkönig Ski Area and is also the starting point of the Königstour. There is plenty of space to park your car, but of course the Skibus will take you there as well. In the afternoon you can ski all the way back to the parking lot. The Skibus stop is a 5 minute walk up the road from the Lodge.
For those looking to ski with little kids you can also drive up the road (or take the Skibus) to the Arturhaus. On the Hochkeil there is a separate, smaller ski area (included in your pass), perfect for practicing with kids or beginners.
Starting in either Mühlbach or Maria Alm, the tour takes you all the way to the edge of the area and all the way back, covering 32 kilometers of slopes. With its magnificent views on the Hochkönig massive, it’s arguably one of Europe’s most beautiful ski tours.
During the summer season your stay in Luchs Lodge includes the Hochkönig card. With this card you have free access to all the lifts that operate during summer, tennis courts, swimming pools, the Hiking Bus through the valley and much, much more. See http://www.hochkoenig.at/en/holiday-salzburg/card.html for more details.
With 760 kilometers of slopes, this is the largest ski area in Austria. It consists of 5 linked ski areas:
– Salzburger Sportwelt
– Schladming-Dachstein
– Gastein
– Hochkönig
– Großarltal
In this vast area 90% of the slopes have snow canons, ensuring high-quality slopes throughout the season. Next to that the geographical location of the area is so, that it receives a lot of snow during passing depressions. The areas are connected through a network of ski busses in such a way, that it never takes longer than 20 minutes to get from area to area.
To start with no less than 4 villages (Schladming, Reiteralm, Flachau en Zauchensee) in the area organise FIS World Cup races. Around these races there are all kinds of activities being organized to entertain the audience, apart from the skiing itself. Highly recommended as an experience!
Furthermore, there is a lot of attention for freestyle and fun skiing. For those not ready for the true snow parks yet, fun slopes have been created. On these slopes, you will find small kickers, bridges and tunnels to make it a much more exciting experience, but less risky than the ‘real thing’.
From Salzburg Airport it is only a 45 minute drive to villages like Flachau and Mühlbach am Hochkönig. From Dover it is about 780 miles if you decide to travel of land.
